How to Port Forward a Security Camera System

Learn what port forwarding is, why it may be needed for remote access, and how to set it up for Uniview and Dahua security camera systems.

What Is Port Forwarding?

Port forwarding is a router setting that tells your internet router where to send incoming traffic from outside your network. In simple terms, it helps outside devices find your recorder or camera system when you are trying to connect remotely.

Think of your internet connection like a building, and each device inside your network like an office inside that building. Port forwarding tells the router which “door” should send traffic to your recorder.

Why Port Forwarding May Be Needed

Many security camera systems can connect through a P2P or cloud-style setup without manual port forwarding. That is usually the easier option.

Port forwarding may still be needed when:

  • You want direct remote access to your recorder
  • You are using software or apps that require direct connection
  • You need remote live view or streaming through specific ports
  • Your installer or IT team is setting up a custom remote-access method
  • Your P2P connection is not the preferred setup for your location

Before You Begin

Before setting up port forwarding, make sure:

  • Your recorder has a stable local IP address on your network
  • You can log in to your internet router
  • You know which recorder or device you are forwarding ports to
  • Your internet provider does not block the ports you need
  • You understand that opening ports can increase security risk if done incorrectly

How to Port Forward Your Security Camera System

Step 1: Find the recorder’s local IP address
On your recorder, go to the network settings and find the local IP address. This is the address your router will use to send the forwarded traffic to the recorder.
Step 2: Log in to your router
Open a web browser and log in to your internet router. Most routers are accessed through a local address such as 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
Step 3: Find the Port Forwarding section
Look for a menu called Port Forwarding, Virtual Server, NAT, or Applications & Gaming. Router brands use different names.
Step 4: Create a new port forwarding rule
Add a new rule and enter the port number, protocol type, and the recorder’s local IP address. Some routers ask for a start port and end port. If you are forwarding one port only, enter the same number in both places.
Step 5: Save the settings
Save or apply your changes. Some routers may reboot after saving.
Step 6: Test remote access
Test the remote connection from outside your network using your app, browser, or client software. If it does not work, double-check the IP address, port numbers, and protocol settings.

SureVision Port Forwarding Guide

If you are setting up port forwarding for a SureVision recorder or camera system, use the port details below.

Port / Setting Value What It Is For
TCP Ports 80, 443, 83 Used for web and service access depending on setup
TCP Port 554 Required for public streaming with Guard Station when connecting through port 80
STUN UDP Ports 4000, 4001, 3478, 3479 Used for connection assistance and communication handling
Transfer UDP Port Range 9999 to 65535 Used for transfer traffic depending on connection type
Update Server 80 Used for update server communication
P2P URL Star4Live.com Uniview P2P service address
Simple SureVision setup tip
Start by forwarding only the ports you actually need. If your remote access method works using P2P, you may not need to open every possible port range.

Blue Line Port Forwarding Guide

If you are setting up port forwarding for a Blue Line recorder or camera system, use the port details below.

Port / Setting Value What It Is For
Port for App / Cameras TCP 37777 Used for app and camera connection traffic
HTTP Web Service TCP 80 Used for browser-based web service access
P2P Connect Port TCP/UDP 8800 to 8803 Used for P2P connection services
Video Stream TCP/UDP Port Range 16759 to 65535 Used for video stream traffic depending on setup
P2P URL easy4ip.com Dahua P2P service address
Simple Blue Line setup tip
When forwarding a Blue Line system, double-check both the port number and the protocol type. Some services use TCP, while others use TCP/UDP.

If Port Forwarding Still Does Not Work

  • Make sure the recorder IP address did not change
  • Check that the rule points to the correct recorder on the network
  • Confirm the port numbers were typed correctly
  • Verify the correct protocol was selected
  • Make sure your router saved the rule
  • Check whether your internet provider blocks certain ports
  • Test from outside your network, not from inside your own Wi-Fi
