PoE vs. IP Cameras Explained

A PoE Camera Is an IP Camera — But Not Every IP Camera Uses PoE

Short answer: a PoE camera is an IP camera that can receive power and network data through Ethernet. The term IP camera describes how the camera communicates over a network; PoE describes one convenient way that a wired IP camera can receive power.

For most new professional wired installations, PoE is one of the cleanest ways to build a PoE security camera system because compatible equipment can carry power and video over Ethernet cabling. In this updated guide, we explain IP cameras, PoE cameras, NVRs, PoE switches, Wi-Fi IP cameras and traditional HD-over-coax CCTV cameras.

PoE Is a Type of IP Camera One Ethernet Cable Local NVR Recording Remote Viewing No Required Monthly Fees
The Difference in One Sentence

An IP camera is any network-based surveillance camera. A PoE camera is an IP camera that supports Power over Ethernet, allowing compatible equipment to deliver electrical power and network data over Ethernet cabling.

What Is an IP Camera?

An IP camera, or Internet Protocol camera, is a digital security camera that communicates over an IP network. Unlike traditional analog CCTV cameras, network cameras encode video digitally and can communicate directly with other network devices.

Professional IP security cameras can support high-resolution video, remote viewing, motion detection, human and vehicle analytics, audio, night vision, local storage options and integration with a network video recorder (NVR).

  • Digital network video instead of a traditional analog camera signal
  • Available in HD, 2K+ and true 8MP / 4K resolutions
  • Can connect through Ethernet or, on certain camera types, Wi-Fi
  • Can support AI motion detection, remote access and smart alerts
  • Can be paired with an NVR for centralized 24/7 or motion-based recording

What Is a PoE Camera?

A PoE camera is a wired IP camera that supports Power over Ethernet. With compatible PoE equipment, the camera can receive electrical power and exchange video and data through an Ethernet cable instead of requiring a separate local power outlet beside the camera.

This is why PoE is popular in professional wired security camera installations. The camera remains hard-wired, installation is cleaner, and compatible cameras can connect directly to PoE ports on an NVR or through a suitable PoE network switch.

  • Power + network data can travel over Ethernet with compatible equipment
  • No separate electrical outlet is normally required beside each PoE camera
  • Hard-wired connectivity avoids depending on a camera-to-router Wi-Fi signal
  • PoE cameras scale naturally into multi-camera NVR systems

How Does a PoE Security Camera System Work?

A typical professional PoE system has four basic parts: the camera, Ethernet cabling, PoE power and an NVR. The camera captures video and sends network data through Ethernet. A compatible PoE NVR or PoE switch supplies power, while the NVR records footage to a local surveillance hard drive.

1. PoE CameraCaptures digital IP video.
2. Ethernet CableCarries network data and supported PoE power.
3. PoE NVR / SwitchProvides compatible network connectivity and power.
4. Local RecordingThe NVR stores footage for playback and evidence export.

Do PoE Cameras Need an NVR?

Not necessarily for basic network access, but an NVR is strongly recommended when you want a professional multi-camera recording system. A compatible NVR adds centralized local storage, playback, search, evidence export, user management and easier remote viewing.

If the NVR has built-in PoE ports, compatible cameras can often connect directly to those ports. If the cameras are connected elsewhere on the network, a suitable PoE switch or PoE equipment may be used instead.

PoE IP Cameras vs. Wi-Fi IP Cameras

Both PoE and Wi-Fi cameras can be IP cameras. The difference is the physical connection. A PoE camera uses Ethernet for its network connection and compatible power delivery. A Wi-Fi IP camera sends network traffic wirelessly but still requires a power source unless it is battery operated.

Wi-Fi can make sense for certain small or difficult-to-wire applications. For businesses, warehouses, schools, parking areas and larger properties, wired PoE is often preferred because the camera does not have to maintain a wireless connection to the router.

What About Traditional CCTV Cameras Over Coax?

PoE cameras are not the only professional wired option. Modern HD-over-coax CCTV security cameras can transmit HD or 4K-capable video over compatible coaxial cabling to a DVR. That makes them especially useful when a property already has coax and BNC connections installed.

A simple rule of thumb is: new network installation → strongly consider PoE IP cameras; existing usable coax → compare an HD-over-coax upgrade before rewiring.

Why Choose PoE Cameras for Professional Surveillance?

PoE cameras are popular for business and professional surveillance because they combine network-camera features with hard-wired connectivity. A properly designed PoE system can support cameras across offices, stores, warehouses, schools, homes, apartment properties, parking areas and multi-building sites.

Cleaner WiringCompatible PoE can deliver power and network data over the same Ethernet run.
High ResolutionChoose HD, 2K+ and 4K IP cameras.
Smart DetectionSupported models can add human / vehicle filtering, perimeter tools and other analytics.
No Required Monthly FeesStore footage locally on a compatible NVR without a mandatory cloud-recording subscription.

What PoE Camera Resolution Should You Choose?

Resolution should match the evidence you need, not simply the highest number on the box. A 4MP or 5MP camera can be an excellent choice for everyday entrances, offices and general coverage. True 8MP / 4K IP cameras provide more recorded detail and can be valuable for high-priority entrances, vehicles, larger scenes and areas where playback detail matters.

Lens choice and camera placement matter just as much. A wide 2.8mm lens covers more area, while a motorized varifocal IP camera can narrow the field of view for gates, loading areas and longer approaches.

What Ethernet Cable Do PoE Security Cameras Use?

Professional PoE cameras are commonly installed with Ethernet cabling such as Cat5e or Cat6, depending on the system design and site requirements. Cable quality, termination, distance, routing and environmental conditions all affect installation reliability.

If you are planning wiring, see our security camera cables and connections and compare Ethernet wiring with traditional siamese coax used by CCTV systems.

Frequently Asked Questions About PoE and IP Cameras

Are PoE cameras and IP cameras the same thing?

A PoE camera is a type of IP camera, but not every IP camera supports PoE. IP describes network communication; PoE describes the ability to receive compatible power over Ethernet.

Are PoE cameras better than Wi-Fi security cameras?

PoE is often preferred for professional multi-camera systems because it provides a hard-wired network connection and does not rely on each camera maintaining a Wi-Fi connection. Wi-Fi may still make sense where running cable is impractical.

Do PoE cameras need a PoE switch?

Not always. A PoE camera needs a compatible source of PoE power. That may be a PoE-enabled NVR, a PoE network switch or another compatible PoE device.

Can PoE cameras record without an NVR?

Capabilities vary by model. For professional continuous recording, centralized playback, storage management and multi-camera operation, a compatible NVR is generally the recommended setup.

Can I mix PoE camera models in one NVR system?

Yes, when the cameras are compatible with the recorder. This lets you use different camera styles and resolutions for entrances, parking areas, interiors, long-range views and specialty applications.

Can I use existing coax cable for a PoE IP camera?

Standard PoE cameras are normally designed for Ethernet cabling. If usable coax is already installed, compare an HD-over-coax CCTV upgrade before deciding to replace existing wiring.

Do PoE cameras require monthly fees?

No required monthly fee is needed for standard local recording and supported SureVision remote-viewing tools when the system is configured with compatible equipment.
