1. How do I locate the model number of my DVR or NVR?
Look for the product label on the bottom or rear of the recorder. The model number may also appear on your online receipt or order confirmation. Record both the model number and order number before opening a guide or requesting support; this prevents instructions for a different recorder line from being used.
2. Where can I find my DVR or NVR user manual?
Use the main Support Portal and select SureVision, Blue Line or Black Line based on the recorder model. The SureVision Support Portal contains current manuals, software, specifications and video guides. Some older recorders originally included a CD-ROM, but the online portal is the better source for the latest available files.
3. Why didn’t I get an HDMI cable with my DVR or NVR?
Package contents vary by recorder and system. Older Extreme Series units included an HDMI cable, while many Pro and Lite Series units did not. For any current product, use the “What’s Included” list on its product page or order confirmation. If an HDMI cable is not listed, connect a compatible cable from the recorder’s HDMI output to an HDMI monitor or television.
4. Does my DVR or NVR have built-in speakers?
Recorders do not normally play audio through a built-in speaker. To hear recorded or live camera audio locally, use a monitor or television with speakers over HDMI, or connect compatible powered speakers if the recorder has an audio output. The camera must support audio, audio recording must be enabled, and local laws must allow it.
5. How do I hook up a monitor to my DVR or NVR?
With both devices powered off, connect the recorder’s HDMI output to the monitor’s HDMI input, then select that input on the monitor. Many recorders also support VGA; select models may have another output. If the screen says “No Signal,” verify the input and cable first. 6. Where do I plug in the mouse on my DVR or NVR?
Plug the supplied USB mouse into a USB port on the recorder. When front and rear ports are available, the rear port is usually the most convenient for the mouse because it leaves the front port open for a USB flash drive during video backup. 7. How do I back up video at my DVR or NVR?
Insert a compatible USB flash drive, search playback by camera/date/time, mark the beginning and end of the incident, and export the selected clip. Menu names and export formats vary by recorder. 8. How do I get the remote control to work with my DVR or NVR?
Legacy recorders only: install fresh batteries and point the remote at the front receiver. If the Add button changed the remote’s device assignment, log in locally, open Setting → General, note the Device Number (commonly 8), press Add on the remote, enter that number, and press Enter. Current recorders may not include or support an infrared remote; use the USB mouse unless the model manual says otherwise.
9. What are the default passwords for my DVR or NVR?
Retained for legacy systems: older recorders may use username/password combinations 888888 / 888888, admin / admin, or 666666 / 666666. These are not universal SureVision credentials. Newer systems require a password to be created during activation. Never expose a recorder to the internet with a default password; change it to a strong, unique password immediately and store it securely.
10. What if my DVR or NVR account is locked and I can’t log in?

12. How many hard drives will my DVR or NVR hold?
Drive-bay capacity is model-specific. For legacy equipment, Extreme Series recorders may hold up to eight drives, Pro Series recorders up to two, and Lite Series, NVR Cube and Wi-Fi NVR units one. 13. What hard drives are compatible with my DVR or NVR?

14. How do I set my DVR or NVR to record constantly?
On a current system, open the recorder’s Record or Storage Schedule, select the camera channels, choose continuous/general recording for every day and time period, apply the schedule, then confirm the recording icon appears. 15. How do I safely turn off my DVR or NVR?

18. What is the difference between an IP camera system and an HD-over-coax CCTV system?

21. How many security cameras do I need?

22. What NVR channel count should I choose?
A recorder channel is one supported camera connection. Select at least enough channels for every planned camera and leave room for growth. Also verify incoming bandwidth, supported resolution, PoE capacity, hard-drive bays and analytics—not only channel count.
23. Can I add more cameras later?
Yes, when the recorder has unused channels and enough bandwidth, power and storage for the added cameras. Buying spare channels now is usually less expensive than replacing a full recorder later. Choose PTZ for active operators, tours or large areas; a PTZ looks in one direction at a time, so fixed cameras should still cover critical locations continuously.
27. Do I need 4K security cameras?
4K/8MP cameras can provide more detail for identification and digital zoom, especially over wider scenes. They also use more bandwidth and storage than lower-resolution cameras. Resolution cannot overcome poor lighting, excessive distance or a lens that is too wide. 28. Do the cameras work at night?

50. Where should cameras be placed?

51. Do I need a junction box?

52. How do I protect the system from power problems?

53. Can I install the system without internet access?

56. How do I set up remote viewing?
First confirm local camera viewing and recording. Test on cellular data after setup; a Wi-Fi-only test does not prove outside access works.
57. Is the remote-viewing app free?

58. Can more than one person view the system?
Yes, supported systems allow multiple authorized users. Create separate recorder/app users instead of sharing the administrator password. Give each person only the cameras and permissions required, such as live view without configuration access. The number of simultaneous streams depends on recorder model, outbound bandwidth, stream quality and network conditions.
59. Why does the app say the recorder is offline?
Confirm the recorder still displays cameras locally. Check power to the modem/router, reseat the LAN cable, verify link lights, confirm the recorder has a valid IP address, gateway and DNS entry, and check whether its P2P/cloud status is online. Restart the network equipment first, then the recorder using its shutdown procedure. If local recording works, the issue is usually network access rather than the cameras.
60. Remote viewing stopped after I replaced my router. What should I do?
Connect the recorder LAN port to the new router, enable DHCP temporarily if appropriate, and confirm the recorder receives an address, gateway and DNS values from the new network. 61. Why can I see live video but not recorded playback in the app?

63. Why is remote video slow, blurry or buffering?
Remote quality depends mainly on upload speed at the recorder site and download/cellular quality at the viewing device. The recorder can still store a higher-quality main stream locally while sending a lighter stream remotely. Avoid reducing recording quality solely to fix remote bandwidth.
64. Can I share access without sharing my administrator password?
Yes, and that is the recommended approach. Create a separate user with a unique password and only the needed live-view, playback or camera permissions. Remove that user when access is no longer required. Never email or text the main administrator password to multiple employees or contractors.
65. Do I need port forwarding?
Many current systems use secure device registration/P2P and do not require manual port forwarding. Do not expose recorder web or service ports to the internet unless the exact guide and network administrator require it. Use strong passwords, current supported firmware and least-privilege accounts. Businesses with managed firewalls should coordinate network changes with their IT provider.
66. How do I protect remote access from unauthorized users?
Change default credentials, use a long unique password, configure recovery securely, create separate non-admin users, remove former employees promptly and keep supported firmware current. Do not publish QR codes, serial numbers or screenshots containing credentials. Keep the recorder and cameras on a managed network and avoid unnecessary internet-exposed ports.
67. Should I record continuously or only on motion?
Continuous recording gives the most complete timeline and avoids depending entirely on event detection. Motion recording extends retention and makes events easier to review but depends on correct detection settings. Many users record continuously while also enabling motion or smart-event markers for fast searching. Critical locations should favor continuous recording when storage allows.
68. Can different cameras use different recording schedules?
Yes. Supported recorders allow schedules by channel and day, such as continuous recording at entrances, motion recording in low-traffic areas and a different schedule after business hours. Use the Copy function carefully and verify every channel after applying changes. A colored schedule on the screen does not replace checking that recorded playback actually exists.
69. What happens when the hard drive becomes full?
With overwrite enabled, the recorder automatically deletes the oldest video and continues recording the newest footage. Without overwrite, recording may stop when storage is full. Confirm overwrite status during setup and after firmware, drive or configuration changes. Export important evidence promptly; a recorder is a rolling archive, not permanent evidence storage.
70. How can I increase the number of days stored?
Increase supported hard-drive capacity, add drives when the recorder has available bays, use efficient supported compression, reduce unnecessary frame rate/bitrate, or use motion-based recording in suitable areas. Do not lower quality on identification cameras without testing the result. Verify the recorder’s maximum drive size and total storage before ordering an upgrade.
71. How do I search for recorded video?
Open Search or Playback, select the camera and date, then use the timeline or event list to locate the incident. Narrow the time range and camera count for faster results. Colors on the timeline may represent continuous, motion or smart-event recording. Confirm recorder date and time before relying on the timestamp.
72. How do I save video for police, insurance or management?
Export the original clip to a clean USB drive, include several minutes before and after the event, and save the manufacturer’s playback tool when offered. Keep an untouched master copy and provide a duplicate. Document the recorder, camera, date/time and person who exported it. Test the file on another computer before the deadline for delivery.
73. Why won’t an exported video play on my computer?
The recorder may export a native evidence format that requires the matching player. Export the player with the video or download the correct PC/Mac player from the support portal. If the recorder offers MP4 or AVI, choose it when broad compatibility is more important, but retain the original evidence file as well. Do not rename the file extension to force playback.
74. Does the recorder store audio with the video?
It can when the selected camera and recorder channel support audio and audio encoding/recording is enabled. Live sound does not always prove the recorded stream contains audio, so test playback. Observe all local consent and notice laws. Disable audio on channels or locations where recording conversations is not permitted.
75. Why is there a gap in recorded video?
Check the recording schedule, motion rules, power history, camera offline log, hard-drive health and recorder time. A motion-only schedule may have no clip when the event falls outside the detection region or duration. If multiple cameras have the same gap, investigate recorder power, hard drive or system time; if one camera has the gap, inspect that camera and cable.
76. Why can I see live video but the camera is not recording?
Confirm the hard drive is present, initialized and healthy; verify the channel is enabled in the recording schedule; check whether manual recording overrides or holidays are active; and look for the recording status icon. Test playback after several minutes. If all cameras fail, focus on storage and schedule settings. If only one fails, inspect that channel’s schedule.

79. Can I hide private areas from view or recording?
Supported cameras and recorders offer privacy masking that blocks selected regions. Configure the mask while viewing the final mounted angle, then test live and recorded video. A digital privacy mask is not a substitute for lawful placement; reposition a camera if it unnecessarily views a neighbor’s property or a legally protected private area.
Diagnostic rule: change one thing at a time. Swap the camera, cable or port with a known-working item to identify which part the problem follows.
80. One camera says offline or has no picture. What should I check?
Check the connector at both ends, PoE/channel status and cable for damage. Move the camera to a known-working short cable and recorder port. If it works there, the installed cable or original port is the likely cause. If a known-working camera fails on the suspect cable, repair the cable. If the original camera fails everywhere, verify initialization, password and compatibility.
81. All cameras are offline. Where do I start?
Confirm recorder or PoE-switch power and whether the camera-port lights are active. Check that cameras are connected to the correct PoE side, not only the recorder LAN port. If an external switch is used, verify its uplink and PoE budget. A simultaneous loss across all cameras points to shared power, switch, recorder configuration or network topology rather than every camera failing at once.
82. The recorder will not power on. What should I check?
Verify the outlet with another device, bypass a failed power strip, reseat both ends of the power cord and confirm the rear power switch is on. Use only the correct supplied or approved power adapter. Disconnect nonessential USB devices and external accessories, then retry. Do not open the recorder or substitute a power supply with a different voltage or polarity.
83. Why is my NVR or DVR beeping?
Beeping is usually an exception alarm such as no hard drive, hard-drive error, network loss, video loss or storage full. Open the recorder’s log or exception menu and identify the cause before silencing the buzzer. Confirm the hard drive shows normal/healthy and that recording is active. Muting the alarm alone does not fix the condition.
84. The recorder is on, but the monitor says “No Signal.” What should I do?
Select the correct HDMI/VGA input on the monitor, reseat or replace the cable, and test another monitor or output. Power the monitor before restarting the recorder. If the recorder was used on another display, its output resolution may be unsupported by the current monitor. Use the model-specific resolution-recovery guide rather than repeatedly power-cycling.
85. The mouse does not work. How can I fix it?
Reseat the USB mouse, try the other recorder USB port and test a basic wired USB mouse. Remove USB hubs, flash drives and wireless-mouse receivers during testing. If the mouse works on a computer but neither recorder port responds after a safe restart, document the recorder model and which ports were tested.
86. The hard drive is missing, uninitialized or abnormal. What should I do?
Check storage status and system logs. A new drive normally must be initialized, which erases its contents. If an existing drive suddenly shows abnormal, do not keep formatting it when evidence is needed. Safely restart once, confirm cables only if qualified and authorized to open the unit, and replace the drive with an approved surveillance model if diagnostics show failure.
87. Why is the image blurry during the day?
Remove protective film, clean the lens with appropriate material, verify the camera is focused if it has an adjustable lens, and check that the target is within the intended distance. Motion blur can require better lighting or exposure adjustment. Digital zoom enlarges pixels; it cannot create detail the lens did not capture.
88. Why is the night image white, foggy or washed out?
Infrared light may be reflecting from a wall, soffit, dome cover, window, spider web, dust or nearby object. Clean the lens/cover, remove protective film, aim the camera away from close reflective surfaces and make sure the gasket or dome is seated correctly. Do not aim infrared cameras through glass; the IR will reflect back into the lens.
89. Why is the night image black and white?
Standard infrared night mode is normally black and white because the camera removes color to capture more low-light detail. Color at night requires enough ambient/white light or a camera designed for color night viewing. If a camera stays black and white during a bright day, verify day/night mode and check whether the IR-cut filter is switching.
90. Why are there insects, webs or floating spots at night?
Infrared LEDs attract or illuminate insects close to the lens, and spiders build webs where insects gather. Clean the camera, remove webs and keep nearby lighting/insect sources away when possible. A separate illuminator placed away from the camera can reduce insects directly in front of the lens. Motion analytics and detection regions can also reduce nuisance alerts.
91. Why does the image flicker, roll or show lines?
Test the camera on a short known-good cable and port. Lines or rolling can come from damaged cabling, poor BNC terminations, ground loops, incorrect power, electrical interference or an incompatible video format. Flicker under artificial lighting can require the correct anti-flicker frequency/exposure setting. Keep video cable away from high-voltage wiring and motors.
92. Why is the camera image pink, purple or the wrong color?
The day/night IR-cut filter may be stuck or the camera may be forced into the wrong mode. Change Day/Night from forced to Auto, cover and uncover the lens to trigger a switch, then safely restart the camera. If the color remains wrong in daylight after a settings default for that camera, the camera may require service.
93. Why does a camera keep restarting or dropping offline?
Intermittent restarts often indicate weak PoE power, excessive cable distance, damaged connectors, water in a connection, insufficient switch PoE budget or an IP conflict. Test on a short known-good cable directly at the recorder. If stable there, correct the installed cable/power path. If unstable on the bench, verify firmware and factory-default only after saving configuration details.
94. Why can’t I hear camera audio?
Confirm the camera model has a microphone, audio is enabled for both main and substreams, the recorder channel supports it and the viewing app/local monitor is not muted. For local sound, use an HDMI monitor with speakers or compatible powered speakers. Test live audio and recorded playback separately because recording audio may have its own setting.
95. Why do I receive too many motion alerts?
Reduce the detection region to exclude trees, roads, reflections and moving shadows; lower sensitivity carefully; use a minimum target size; and enable human/vehicle smart detection on supported models. Correct the camera angle before relying only on lower sensitivity. Test both daytime and nighttime because insects, rain and headlight changes create different triggers.
96. The PTZ camera will not pan, tilt or zoom. What should I check?
Verify the camera has sufficient approved power, is online and is added with the correct protocol/credentials. Test PTZ control locally at the recorder before testing the app. Check user permissions, control speed and whether another user or automated tour is controlling it. For coax PTZ, verify control protocol/address and any required control wiring.
97. Why is the recorder’s date or time wrong?
Set the correct time zone first, then date/time format, daylight-saving rules and NTP synchronization. Make sure cameras synchronize with the recorder when supported. If the time resets after every power loss, the recorder may need service. Correct time before an incident occurs; changing it later can make searches and exported evidence confusing.
98. The system stopped working after a power outage. What should I do?
Confirm the outlet, surge protector/UPS, recorder, PoE switch, router and monitor all have power. Restart network equipment, then the recorder in an orderly sequence. Check hard-drive health, date/time, camera status and recording after startup. If equipment was exposed to a surge, do not repeatedly power it; document symptoms and test with approved power components.
99. Should I update the firmware?
Only use firmware approved for the exact model and hardware version. Read the release notes, export configuration when supported, use reliable power and never interrupt the update. Firmware from a similar-looking model can permanently damage the device. Do not update solely because a file exists; update for a supported security, compatibility or stability reason.
100. Should I factory-reset the camera or recorder?
A factory reset should be a later troubleshooting step, not the first. It can erase network, recording, user, alert and camera settings and may require every device to be initialized again.
