Security Camera System Setup Guide

Use this checklist before permanently installing your security cameras. Set up the recorder, test the cameras, verify recording, connect the network and confirm playback before mounting equipment.

Do Not Mount the Cameras Yet
First assemble and test the system in one location. Connect the recorder, monitor, mouse and at least one camera using a short known-good cable. Confirm live video, recording and playback before running long cables or permanently mounting cameras.
Step 1

Identify Your Security Camera System

The basic installation process is similar, but passwords, menus, mobile apps and detailed setup instructions vary between equipment lines.

Complete First-Install Checklist

Before Permanent Installation

✓ Identify the recorder and camera model numbers
✓ Connect the recorder to a monitor and mouse
✓ Connect one camera using a short test cable
✓ Power on the recorder
✓ Complete the startup wizard
✓ Create and save the administrator password
✓ Set the correct date, time and time zone
✓ Verify the hard drive is recognized
✓ Confirm live camera video
✓ Confirm video is recording
✓ Test recorded-video playback
✓ Connect the recorder to your router or network
✓ Configure remote viewing if needed
✓ Test night vision
✓ Export one test recording to USB
✓ Only then install the cameras permanently
Step 2

Connect the Recorder, Monitor & Mouse

1. Place the NVR or DVR near your test monitor.
2. Connect HDMI between the recorder and monitor when supported.
3. Connect the USB mouse supplied with the recorder.
4. Make sure the monitor is set to the correct HDMI or VGA input.
5. Connect the approved recorder power supply or power cord.
6. Turn the recorder on.
If the recorder appears to power up but the monitor shows No Signal, check the monitor input and HDMI/VGA cable before assuming there is a recorder problem.
Step 3

Connect & Test One Camera

Start with one camera. Once it works correctly, repeat the process with the remaining cameras.

IP / PoE Camera Use a short known-good Ethernet cable between the camera and a compatible PoE camera port on the NVR or PoE switch.
HD-Over-Coax Camera Connect the camera video cable to a DVR BNC input and connect the camera to its proper power supply.
Step 4

Complete the First Login & Startup Wizard

1. Select the correct language.
2. Set the time zone.
3. Set the correct date and system time.
4. Create the administrator password when prompted.
5. Configure password-recovery information if supported.
6. Review network settings.
7. Complete the recorder startup wizard.
Save the password. Keep the recorder administrator password and recovery information somewhere secure. Do not repeatedly guess a forgotten password.
Step 5

Verify Date, Time & Time Zone

Correct time is critical for locating incident video later. Check the time zone, date, clock and daylight-saving settings before relying on the system for evidence.

Step 6

Check the Hard Drive

Open the recorder storage or disk information page and confirm that the installed surveillance hard drive is detected and shows a normal or healthy status.

Do not assume the system is recording just because live cameras appear on the monitor. Always verify the hard drive and test playback.
Step 7

Confirm Recording & Playback

1. Confirm the camera has live video.
2. Check the recording schedule.
3. Allow the system to record for several minutes.
4. Open Playback or Search.
5. Select the camera and current date.
6. Play the recording.
7. Confirm video and audio, when applicable.
Step 8

Connect the Recorder to Your Network

Connect the recorder's dedicated LAN or network connection to your router or network switch.

Important for PoE NVRs: The recorder's camera PoE ports and its LAN/network uplink serve different purposes. Use the proper network/LAN connection when connecting the recorder to the property's router or switch.
Step 9

Set Up Remote Viewing

Do this only after live viewing, recording and local playback are working correctly. Select your equipment line below for the correct app and instructions.

Step 10

Test Night Viewing Before Finalizing Camera Position

A camera position that looks excellent during the day can create infrared reflection or poor identification at night.

✓ Check the image after dark
✓ Look for infrared reflection from walls or soffits
✓ Make sure the lens is clean
✓ Keep spider webs and insects away from the camera face
✓ Check that important subjects are large enough to identify
✓ Re-aim the camera before drilling final holes when necessary
Step 11

Export One Test Video

Before the system is considered complete, export a short recording to USB and test the exported file on another computer when possible.

Learning the export process before an incident occurs can save valuable time when recorded evidence is actually needed.
Final Installation

Now Install the Cameras

Once the complete bench test passes, install your permanent cabling and camera mounts.

✓ Keep connectors protected from weather
✓ Avoid running low-voltage camera cable parallel to high-voltage wiring when possible
✓ Label both ends of each camera cable
✓ Leave service loops where practical
✓ Use compatible junction boxes outdoors
✓ Test each completed cable before finishing the installation
✓ Recheck live video, recording and playback after installation
After Installation

Final System Check

Live Video Every camera displays normally.
Recording Each required camera is recording.
Playback Recorded video can be found and played.
Date & Time Recorder timestamps are correct.
Hard Drive Storage status is normal.
Remote Viewing Phone/computer viewing works when required.
Night Video Night image has been tested.
USB Backup At least one recording has been exported.
Troubleshooting

If Something Does Not Work, Do Not Install It Yet

Troubleshoot with the equipment still on the bench. Change only one component at a time so you can determine whether the issue follows the camera, cable, recorder port, power supply or network.
