Wired Security Camera System Checklist & Planning Guide
A reliable wired surveillance system starts with a plan. Before buying cameras or running cable, identify what needs to be monitored, how much detail each location requires, where the recorder will be installed and how much room the system should have to grow.
Use this checklist to plan professional security camera systems for businesses, homes and larger properties while choosing the right security cameras, cabling, NVR capacity and storage.
Wired Camera System Planning Checklist
Step 1: Map the Property and Coverage Priorities
Start with a simple property map. Mark entrances, exits, driveways, parking areas, loading docks, registers, inventory areas, hallways, gates and other locations where useful recorded video would matter.
Then give each proposed camera a specific job. Is it intended to provide a broad overview, identify a person at an entrance, document a transaction, monitor a long driveway or capture activity at a gate? That decision affects camera style, lens, resolution and placement.

Step 2: Choose the Right Camera for Each Location
A complete system does not need to use the same camera everywhere. Mixing compatible camera styles often produces better coverage.
Useful for visible exterior coverage, driveways, perimeters and longer directional views.
Common for entrances, offices, retail spaces and general interior or exterior coverage.
Helpful when the field of view needs to be adjusted around a specific target or distance.

Step 3: Evaluate Resolution, Lighting and Image Detail
Resolution matters, but it should be evaluated together with lens choice, target distance and lighting. High-definition and 4K cameras can provide excellent detail when properly positioned, while an overly wide view can reduce the useful detail available on a particular face or object.
Check every important location during both daylight and nighttime conditions. Step 4: Plan Ethernet Cabling and PoE
Standard IP / PoE camera installations typically use Ethernet cabling to carry network data and power to compatible cameras. Map each cable path before ordering equipment and account for vertical runs, service loops, conduit and the route back to the NVR or network equipment.
- Use suitable Cat5e or Cat6 cabling for the installation environment.
- Keep standard Ethernet distance limits in mind; specialized equipment may support different distances.
- Label both ends of every cable.
- Protect outdoor terminations from weather and moisture.
- Plan conduit and penetrations before mounting cameras.
- Use appropriate surge/lightning protection where the site requires it.
Step 5: Choose the Right NVR Size
Do not select an NVR based only on the number of cameras being installed today. Consider channel count, supported camera resolution, bandwidth, PoE capacity, drive bays, storage capability, remote users and future expansion.
If eight cameras are planned but expansion is likely, a recorder with additional channels may be a better long-term choice than filling every available channel on day one.

Step 6: Calculate Video Storage Around Your Retention Goal
There is no universal number of recording days that is right for every property. Decide how long you want footage available, then size storage around the actual system.
Retention is influenced by camera count, resolution, frame rate, compression, bitrate, scene activity, recording schedule and hard-drive capacity. Continuous recording generally requires more storage than event-based recording.
For businesses with internal policies, insurance requirements or regulatory obligations, establish the required retention period before choosing hard-drive capacity.
Step 7: Plan Recording Modes and Smart Detection
Professional recorders can support different recording strategies depending on the equipment and configuration. Options may include continuous recording, scheduled recording, motion/event recording and intelligent detection on supported models.
For important business areas, consider whether continuous recording, event-based recording or a combination is most appropriate. Configure detection zones carefully so alerts focus on useful activity instead of irrelevant movement.
Step 8: Plan Remote Viewing and User Access
Decide who needs remote access before configuring the system. Owners, managers and other authorized users may need different levels of access to live video, playback and administrative settings.
- Use strong, unique passwords.
- Limit administrative privileges to users who actually need them.
- Keep system software and firmware maintained according to supported update procedures.

Step 9: Plan for Expansion Before Installation
Adding capacity during the planning stage is usually easier than replacing the recorder later. Consider possible future cameras, additional buildings, new entrances, expanded parking areas and changing business operations.
Recorder channels are only part of scalability. Also consider PoE capacity, network design, storage expansion and whether the recorder supports the camera features you may want later.
Step 10: Test the System Before Calling the Project Finished
After installation, verify more than the live camera picture. Test the system as though you were trying to retrieve evidence after an incident.
- Confirm every camera is recording as intended.
- Check camera names and recorder time settings.
- Review entrance and identification views.
- Test all important cameras after dark.
- Verify playback and video export.
- Test authorized remote viewing.
- Document passwords and system information securely.
Compliance and Project Requirements
Government, institutional and regulated projects may have specific equipment, cybersecurity, privacy or procurement requirements. Do not assume every camera or recorder meets every compliance standard simply because it is part of a particular product family.
