Fixed LENS vs. Varifocal Lens
Just a couple quick simple tips:
These pictures above were taken with fixed lenses - with varifocal lenses you can get various angles and "dial in the exact lens you would like." Varifocal lenses are a bit more expensive, due to the fact that you are getting many sizes as opposed to a fixed lens.
It is common to go with a 3.6mm or even a 6mm lens for your wide areas of coverage, and use the 8mm or higher to zoom or dial in on your object. Remember, the 3.6mm covers about a 90 degree angle. The 12mm covers about a 25 degree angle so you do use width as you go up in numbers in terms of lens size.
And finally, we carry varifocal lenses up to 100mm!
So both lenses are good, the fixed and the varifocal. Use the varifocal when zooming in and/or the distance and viewing angle are difficult to judge. Use the fixed when you have a clear idea of your viewing angle.
